Flat Feet Treatment & Support in Massachusetts

Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, occur when the arches of your feet flatten and touch the ground when you stand. Some people are born with flat feet, while others develop it over time due to injury, aging, or repetitive strain.

While flat feet don’t always cause pain, many patients experience discomfort, fatigue, or problems in their ankles, knees, hips, or back. Left untreated, flat feet can affect your posture, balance, and mobility.

What Causes Flat Feet?

What Causes Flat Feet?

Flat feet can develop for several reasons, including:

  • Genetics – Some people are born with naturally lower arches.
  • Injury or Trauma – Damage to tendons or foot ligaments can cause the arch to collapse.
  • Obesity – Extra weight adds strain to the arches over time.
  • Aging – The tendons and ligaments stretch and weaken naturally.
  • Neuromuscular Conditions – Disorders that affect muscle tone or coordination can contribute.

Symptoms & How Flat Feet Affect You

Some people may not experience pain or problems even when they have flat feet. However, others have the following symptoms, which may need attention:

  • Aching or burning pain in the feet or arches
  • Heel pain or ankle instability
  • Fatigue after long periods of standing or walking
  • Pain that worsens on uneven ground
  • Discomfort in the knees, hips, or lower back due to misalignment

Early treatment can prevent complications and improve long-term comfort.

Treatment Options & Approaches

At Central Massachusetts Podiatry, we take a personalized approach to flat feet treatment. Based on a detailed evaluation, your podiatrist may recommend:

Acute Phase: Managing Pain and Inflammation

During the acute phase, the focus is on reducing pain, inflammation, and stress on the tendons and arches to allow healing and prevent further injury.

Treatments include:

  • Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation (R.I.C.E.)
Helps control swelling and reduce inflammation in the early stages. Patients are advised to limit aggravating activities and keep the foot supported.

  • Walking Boot (Immobilization)
A walking boot or supportive shoe may be used to offload weight and protect the arch and posterior tibial tendon as it heals.

  • Cortisone Injection
In select cases, a targeted injection may be given to reduce inflammation and relieve pain quickly, helping the patient move more comfortably.

  • Physical Therapy
Early therapy focuses on gentle range-of-motion exercises and strengthening to restore tendon function and reduce stiffness.

  • Support – Aircast Posterior Tibial Brace
This specialized brace supports the arch and reduces strain on the posterior tibial tendon, especially during walking or standing.

Chronic Phase: Long-Term Support and Correction

Once inflammation has settled, the chronic phase focuses on improving foot mechanics, preventing recurrence, and maintaining function.

Treatments include:

  • Custom Orthotics
Personalized arch supports designed to realign the foot, correct overpronation, and provide long-term relief by redistributing pressure evenly across the foot.

  • Ankle-Foot Orthotic (AFO)
For more advanced flatfoot cases or posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, an AFO provides additional structural stability and alignment support.

  • Surgery
In severe or unresponsive cases, surgical options may be considered to reconstruct the arch, repair tendons, or realign bones for lasting correction and improved function.
