What Are Bunions & Hammer Toes?

Bunions and hammer toes are two of the most common foot deformities, often appearing together. Here’s how they differ:

  • Bunions: A bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe, causing it to lean toward the second toe.

A bunionette, also called a tailor’s bunion, is a kind of bunion or a painful bump that forms at the base of the little toe on the outside of the foot. It occurs on the opposite side and is typically smaller.

  • Hammer Toes: Are another type of forefoot abnormality that results in a contracture, or prominence of the toe. The toes bend or curl downward instead of pointing forward, usually affecting the second, third, or fourth toe.

Causes & Risk Factors

You may be more likely to develop bunions or hammer toes if you have:

  • Genetics: A family history of foot deformities.
  • Footwear: Shoes that are too tight, narrow, or high-heeled.
  • Foot structure: Flat feet, high arches, or abnormal gait.
  • Arthritis or other conditions that affect joints.
  • Past injuries to the foot or toes.
